VA Dept. of Motor Vehicle Requirements for Teenagers

• Virginia law requires teenagers to have 36 periods of Classroom Instruction and 14 periods of Behind-the-Wheel Instruction (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation) to obtain their Virginia Driver's License.

• Permits may be obtained at 15 years and 6 months

• You must hold your permit for 9 months and be 16 years and 3 months old before you are eligible for your permanent license.

• Teens under 18 are required to have 45 hours of driving (30 hrs daytime & 15 hrs nighttime) with their parents. These hours must be logged. You may obtain a Parent/Student log book from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

• Parents must sign a statement on the Driving Certificate that certifies the student has completed the 45 hours of driving with a parent.
