VA Dept. of Motor Vehicle Requirements for Teenagers

• Virginia law requires teenagers to have 36 periods of Classroom Instruction

• 14 periods of Behind-the-Wheel Instruction (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation)

• Permits may be obtained at 15 years and 6 months

• You must hold your permit for 9 months and be 16 years and 3 months old before you are eligible for your permanent license.

• Teens under 18 are required to have 45 hours of driving (30 hrs daytime & 15 hrs nighttime) with their parents. These hours must be logged. You may obtain a Parent/Student log book from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

• Parents must sign a statement on the Driving Certificate that certifies the student has completed the 45 hours of driving with a parent.

• Behind-the-Wheel sessions are scheduled Monday-Friday usually after a student gets out of school (some Saturdays). They run for seven consecutive days excluding Sundays

• Students that are under 19 are given their driving test by the instructor. Once they have passed the test they are issued their 180-day temporary license (provided they have met the DMV requirements).
  

• Behind-the-Wheel is 14 periods long which consists of 7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation.

• We pick-up and drop-off the student for the behind-the-wheel sessions in most locations. We service most of the Virginia Beach area and parts of Chesapeake (some locations require special arrangements)
