Requirements for Teenage Licenses

  • Teenagers 17 years old and younger must complete 36 periods of Classroom Instruction

  • Teenagers must complete 14 periods of Behind-the-Wheel Instruction (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation)

  • Permits may be obtained at 15 years and 6 months by going to the DMV and taking the knowledge test

  • You must hold your permit for 9 months and be 16 years and 3 months old before you are eligible for your driver's license. You do not have to wait till your 9 months is up to take the Behind-the-Wheel Instruction

  • Teens under 17 and under are required to have 45 hours of driving (30 daytime and 15 after sunset) with their parent/guardian.

  • Parents must sign a statement on the Driving Certificate that certifies the student has completed the 45 hours of driving with a parent/guardian.

  • Students 18 years old as of 7/1/2016  are no longer required to take Classroom or Behind-the-Wheel Instruction. You must hold your permit for 60 days and then you can go to the DMV to take your driving test. A parent/guardian or other licensed driver who has been working with you on your driving must complete the In-car Maneuvers Observation Record Form CSMA 19.
